The History of Mother's Day
First, get ready for a deep dive into the history of Mother’s Day, some fascinating facts, and of course, a healthy dose of humor with a dozen Mother’s Day jokes. And stick around till the end for a special thank you to all the moms out there. Let’s get started!”

Mother’s Day is a holiday that’s all about honoring motherhood and the impact of mothers in society. But where did this tradition begin? The story takes us back to ancient times with festivals like the Greek cult to Cybele and the Roman festival of Hilaria, dedicated to mother goddesses. Fast forward to the early Christian festival known as ‘Mothering Sunday,’ which was a time for returning to your ‘mother church’—the main church near your home. Over time, this merged with the American Mother’s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.
But the Mother’s Day we know today was first celebrated in 1908, thanks to Anna Jarvis. After her mother’s death, Anna envisioned a day where all mothers could be appreciated for their tireless efforts. Her dream became a reality when President Woodrow Wilson officially declared the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day in 1914.

Now, let’s sprinkle in some interesting facts:
Did you know that more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year? That’s a lot of 'Hi Mom!'s going around.
Americans spend over $3 billion on flowers for Mother’s Day. That’s a whole lot of love in bloom. Do you have any idea how many sushi rolls you could buy with that kind of money?
And here’s a heart warming one one: the traditional flower of Mother’s Day is the carnation. Pink or red to honor mothers who are with us, and white for those who are no longer here.
